Halle Bailey to play Ariel in Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid
Disney have made a key addition to the cast for their upcoming live-action remake of animated classic The Little Mermaid, casting singer Halle Bailey in the lead role of the film's titular mermaid, Ariel.
Known primarily for her work as one half of R&B sister duo Halle x Chloe, Bailey is the latest addition to the film's steadily growing cast, with Jacob Tremblay (The Predator, Wonder) already confirmed for the role of Flounder and rapper/actress Awkwafina cast in the role of Scuttle. There have also been rumours of a role for Melissa McCarthy, although these have yet to be officially confirmed.
The new live-action remake is being helmed by Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall, who said of Bailey's casting: "Halle possesses a rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance, plus a glorious singing voice.”
The film will also feature new songs written by Lin Manuel Miranda, the man behind hit musical Hamilton. There's no confirmed release date for the film as yet, but The Little Mermaid is due to begin shooting next year.
