Harry Shearer, voice of Ned Flanders and Mr Burns, quits The Simpsons
Harry Shearer, who provided the voices of Mr Burns, Smithers, Principal Skinner and Ned Flanders on The Simpsons, has revealed that he is to leave the show.
Shearer seemingly announced his departure on Twitter earlier today (May 14th), tweeting that producer James L. Brooks has informed him via his lawyer that he is free to leave the show. He wrote:
from James L. Brooks' lawyer: "show will go on, Harry will not be part of it, wish him the best.". (1/2)— Harry Shearer (@theharryshearer) May 14, 2015
This because I wanted what we've always had: the freedom to do other work. Of course, I wish him the very best. (2/2)— Harry Shearer (@theharryshearer) May 14, 2015
It had been suggested over the weekend that Shearer had been reluctant to sign a new contract to continue on the show over merchandising rights, but his tweets suggest that this is not the key reason for his departure.
The Simpsons launched in 1989 and will reach its 625th epsiode at the end of its latest series.
