Harry Styles to talks to play Prince Eric in new Disney live-action The Little Mermaid
One Direction mainman Harry Styles is in talks to take a starring role in the new live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Styles is in talks to join the cast and play opposite Halle Bailey, known primarily for her work as one half of R&B sister duo Halle x Chloe, who has been cast as Ariel.
Also in talks to join the cast are Jacob Tremblay and rapper/actress Awkwafina, who are up for the roles of Flounder and Scuttle, while Melissa McCarthy in line to play villain Ursula.
Rob Marshall, director of Mary Poppins Return and Chicago, will take charge of the new movie, working from a script from Poppins writer David Magee.
Released in 1989, the original adapted Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale, earning $233 million at the box office in the process.
The movie told the story of Ariel, a mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human, after falling in love with a human prince named Eric.
The new film will reprise many of the songs from the original as well as a series of new ones, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken.
Eric, the character Styles is in line to play, had no songs in the original movie, but did have two in the subsequent stage musical. If he secures the role, it is expected songs would be written for him to perform.
