High-Rise's Ben Wheatley to direct The Meg 2
Ben Wheatley, director of High-Rise and Free Fire, has signed up to direct the sequel to The Meg.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Wheatley, whose new take on Rebecca has just debuted on Netflix over the weekend, has agreed to take on the super-sized shark sequel.
The Meg starred Jason Statham, Jessica McNamee, Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose and Rainn Wilson.
Statham led the way as former Naval captain and expert diver Jonas Taylor, who is recruited for a deep-sea mission to rescue Chinese scientists under attack from a giant white shark, not just any shark, a pre-historic 75-foot-long great white shark known as the Megalodon.
The film grossed over $530 million at the box office, leading to the sequel, which is to be titled The Meg 2: The Trench, being ordered.
Wheatley's next project will be the sequel to Tomb Raider, which is due to begin in the coming weeks. Amy Jump, Wheatley's regular writing partner, has penned the screenplay for that.
