Jason Bourne - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

It’s been nine years since the release of The Bourne Ultimatum, then the third instalment in a franchise that began in 2002 with The Bourne Identity. At the time star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass insisted that it would be the last time you saw either in the franchise and for a long time it looked that way. A spin-off starring Jeremy Renner was released in 2012, but failed to capture audiences' imaginations in quite the same way as Damon’s Bourne had.

Conflicting statements would follow, Damon and Greengrass were interested and then they weren’t and so on and so on, but eventually, at the tail end of 2014, the pair finally signed on the dotted line and committed to a fourth movie, a movie that hits cinemas this week.

In Jason Bourne we find Bourne scratching a living and hiding from the CIA, but a startling discovery about his family and an old friend force him to return and search for more answers about his past and family.

A returning Damon is joined by Julia Stones, who is back for another round, while Vincent Cassel, Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed, Ato Essandoh and Alicia Vikander are new additions to the cast.

It hits DVD shelves on Monday (November 28th, you can pre-order it on the right-hand side of the page), but we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons you’ll love it...

The action sequences are unbelievable…

The Bourne movies have always had great action sequences and this is no exception. Fast-paced, always on the movie and incredibly physical, the visceral power that was a trademark of the early movies is back with a vengeance.

It’s lean and mean…

Nine years is a long time for an action hero to be out of the game and the filmmakers could have been forgiven for trying to fill in the gaps, but there’s none of that, this is a lean, fat-free two hour thriller and action is only ever seconds away...

Alicia Vikander is an excellent addition to the cast…

The Danish Girl star and Oscar winner plays Heather Lee, a computer whizz who is drafted by the CIA to look after cyber security. She’s a brooding and unmistakable presence at the heart of the film.

But it’s actually Tommy Lee Jones who steals the show…

The Bourne movies have form when it comes to scheming CIA elder statesmen, Brian Cox’s Ward Abbott and Albert Finney's Dr. Albert Hirsch in particular, and competing for the best of them is Tommy Lee Jones’ Robert Dewey. He’s ruthless and captivating in equal measure.

You get the feeling there’s plenty more to come…

You’ll get no spoilers here, but we’d be very surprised if this is the last we see of Damon’s Bourne and there’s plenty of scope for an exciting new direction.

Jason Bourne is released on DVD on Monday (November 28th) and you can pre-order it here.
