hmv's Albums Of The Year - SUNN O)))

We've reached the final throes of 2019, an appropriate time to look back at the many excellent LPs that have been released this year.

To celebrate the year and the albums it has produced, hmv have rounded up 50 of the best of them for our guide to the best albums of 2019. It's available to pick-up in store now and, to coincide, we're going to be running interviews with some of the artists who've made the cut.

We continue today with drone metallers SUNN O))) and their long-time collaborator Tos Nieuwenhuizen. He looks back on their 2019 and the making of Life Metal...

Congratulations, you’re in hmv’s albums of the year, how does it feel?

"I feel honoured, but also surprised, I’m not an expert on UK record retailing but HMV is an all-over-the-country big store right? Never expected an oddball cult outfit like Sunn in their bins..."

How do you look back on the making of Life Metal? Was it a difficult record to make?

"It wasn’t particularly difficult, we had a specific amount of time to record and mix due to the all-analogue nature of the process and a handful of ideas. The whole plan was to make it as close to a live Sunn-experience as possible. And we were surrounded by quality guest-performers and engineers."

What are your plans for 2020?

"There will be a short tour in January, some dates in Italy/Belgium/Luxembourg ending with a three-day residency at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris. That will be the end of touring for a while for us."

How has 2019 been for you? Has it been a good year?

"This has been our busiest year in a long time. We did two tours both in Europe and the US and released two albums. I consider that a good year!"

Aside from your own LP, what has been your favourite album of 2019?

"The Crucible by Motorpsycho, a very underrated, at least in the UK, band from Norway."

Favourite film?

Favourite TV series?

"The Chase."

Finally, what’s been your moment of 2019?

"That’s a tie between Sunn recording at the BBC and Motorpsycho recording the successor to The Crucible on a farm in France, where I performed kitchen duties..."
