Idris Elba to play villain in new adaptation of hit musical Cats

Idris Elba has signed up to play the villain in the new Hollywood adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical Cats

According to Variety, Elba will join Taylor Swift, James Corden, Ian McKellen and Jennifer Hudson in the movie, which is to be directed by The King's Speech and Les Miserables man Tom Hooper.

Lee Hall, who wrote both Billy Elliott and the upcoming Elton John biopic, has adapted Lloyd Webber’s musical, which was itself adapted from a book of children’s poems by T.S. Eliot.

The musical, which first opened in 1981, tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life.

Production will get underway in November.

Elba is currently filming another villainous role, this time in Hobbs and Shaw, the new spin-off from Fast and Furious, starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Jason Statham

In that, he is playing a character named Brixton. He is billed as an international terrorist and criminal mastermind.
