Director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin have been working on a sequel to the 1996 movie for well over five years, but finally got approval from Fox in November. They will begin shooting in two weeks time.
The sequel will star The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth, rising star Jessie Usher, with Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A Fox, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch all returning to the reprise their rolea. Usher's role is to play the son of Captain Steven Hillier, the role played by Will Smith in the original blockbuster. Smith has currently said he will not be returning for the sequel. Hemsworth looks set to play the son in law of President Whitmore, played by Pullman.
Independence Day starred Smith, Goldblum and Bill Pullman and focused on a disparate group of people who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a destructive alien attack, planning their last stand against the alien invasion. It grossed over $800 million at the box office.
