James Cameron reveals there will now be four Avatar sequels
James Cameron has revealed that there will now be four sequels to his mega-hit sci-fi epic Avatar.
Cameron, who had previously announced that he would be producing three sequels to Avatar, revealed last night (April 14th) that he is adding a further sequel.
The director, who pulled the first sequel from a planned release of Christmas 2017 a few weeks ago, also confirmed when the sequels would hit screens.
The first sequel will be released around in Christmas 2018, followed by Avatar 3 in 2020, Avatar 4 in 2022, and Avatar 5 in 2023.
Speaking about the sequels, the director said: "We’ve decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic proces. We’ve begun to bump up against the limitation of our art form. There’s just too much story I’ve been working with the top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of Avatar going forward. The environments, new cultures — whatever it takes to bring it to life. From what I’m seeing of the art on the wall, in pure imagination is just beyond the first film. I’m speechless.”
Cameron also revealed that the movies do not follow on from each other, but are parts of a larger story, adding: “Each one [of the sequels] stands alone but together form a complete saga, a true epic saga told in this rich complex world.”
