Jared Leto signs up to star as vampire Morbius in Spider-Man spin-off
Jared Leto is to play Morbius in a new big-budget comic book adaptation.
The film will be based on the comic book series Morbius The Living Vampire, which began in 1971's Amazing Spider-Man No. 101. Initially a foe for Spider-Man, over time Morbius began to headline his own comic book titles.
The books tell the story of Michael Morbius, a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist who tries to cure a rare blood disease using an experimental treatment that combines electroshock therapy and vampire bats.
Sadly, things don't exactly work out and Morbius gains a taste for human blood. As well as this, he can fly, has superhuman strength and healing capabilities. When he bites victims and drinks their blood, his attacks can prove lethal, but when bitten by him, his victims do not become vampires.
Daniel Espinosa, director of sci-fi thriller Life, will take charge of the adaptation.
Leto will next be seen as The Joker in the Suicide Squad sequel in 2019 and is also expected to appear in the Harley Quinn spin-off and new project Gotham City Sirens.
