Joaquin Phoenix pulls out of talks to play Marvel's Doctor Strange
Joaquin Phoenix has pulled out of talks with Marvel to play Doctor Strange.
Phoenix had been in high-level talks with the studio to play Strange, but, according to Deadline, they are now over, much to the studio's disapointment.
Marvel are now reportedly lining up discussions with Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jared Leto to take the role, but not with Ethan Hawke, who had been linked with the role.
Scott Derrickson, best known for directing The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister and this year's Deliver Us From Evil, has signed up to direct the movie. Jon Spaihts is currently working on the script.
Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, he is the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats and possesses a number of great powers.
Phoenix will next be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson's new thriller Inherent Vice, which you can see the trailer for here.
