Joel Kinnaman set to return in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad

Back in March this year, after it was announced that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn would direct the second Suicide Squad movie, the producers behind the film were keen to stress that Gunn's film would be a “total reboot” rather than a straight sequel to David Ayer's 2016 movie.

However, it appears that not everything from the first film is being consigned to the dustbin. Following last month's announcement that Viola Davis would be returning to reprise the role of Amanda Waller in Gunn's upcoming film, it has now been confirmed that Joel Kinnaman will also be returning as Colonel Rick Flag.

Although Gunn will be working with a mostly new cast for The Suicide Squad, currently slated for release in 2021, Kinnaman becomes the forth returning cast member from David Ayer's 2016 film, with Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney also reprising their roles as Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, respectively.

New additions to the cast for Gunn's movie include former wrestler John Cena and Luther star Idris Elba, although their roles in the film have yet to be officially confirmed. As things stand, there's no confirmed UK release date either, but we do know that the film is scheduled to debut in the US on August 6th 2021.
