John Boyega to star in Pacific Rim 2
John Boyega, star of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will lead the sequel to Pacific Rim.
Boyega, who is currently filming the sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will play the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost in the new movie.
The news of Boyega's casting was confirmed yesterday (June 6th) along with the announcement that Steven S. DeKnight, best known as the creator of Spartacus: Blood and Sand and its assorted spin-offs, will direct the movie.
It had looked earlier this year like the chances of a sequel to the blockbuster, which was created and directed by Guillermo Del Toro, were slim after Legendary Pictures pulled the movie from its schedule and no replacement date was put in, but with the news of Boyega's casting it was also confirmed that production will begin later this year.
The movie starred Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba and was set in the future where a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, in the midst of that a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon and try to save humanity.
The sequel is rumoured to be titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, but there is currently no release date pencilled in.
