John Cena in talks to take key role in Suicide Squad reboot
John Cena is in talks to take a key role in the reboot of Suicide Squad.
The Suicide Squad are a gang of villains and criminals, who are put together and forced by the US government into service as a disposable black ops team. They are led by a government operative Dr Amanda Waller.
According to Variety, Cena, who made his name in WWE, but has since taken starring roles in Blockers, Trainwreck and Transformers spin-off Bumblebee, is in talks to take an unspecified role in the reboot, which will be written and directed by James Gunn.
If talks work out, Cena will join Idris Elba, who is also confirmed to take a key role in the reboot, though he will not be playing Deadshot, the role he was expected to take over from Will Smith. Instead, Elba will play a new, as yet unnamed character.
Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis's Amanda Waller and Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang are the only other characters expected to return for Gunn's reboot, which will begin production in the autumn.
Gunn's movie will not be a straight sequel, but a completely new take on the characters and story. It is due for release on August 6th in 2021.
