Beloved British actor John Hurt has been knighted in the New Year Honours list.

The Alien star has been given the nod for his services to drama in recognition of an acting career that has lasted over five decades.

Hurt joins actress and writer Joan Collins, poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy and actress Kristin Scott Thomas, who have all been made Dames.

As well as this, funny man James Corden and actress Sheridan Smith have also become OBEs for services to drama.

Goodness Gracious Me leading lady Meera Syal will receive a CBE, also for services to drama and literature, while actress Emily Watson is to be awarded an OBE.

Jamal Edwards, founder and chief executive officer of breakout success SBTV, will also be given an MBE for services to music.

A total of 1,164 people are honoured by the Queen on this year's New Year list, most of whom have been recognised for work in their communities. The awards are split equally between men and women. You can find the full New Year Honours List here.
