Jon Watts to take charge of third Spider-Man solo movie
Jon Watts will return to direct the third Spider-Man movie.
On Friday (September 27th), it was confirmed that Marvel and Sony had negotiated a new deal that will see Spider-Man return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for one final solo movie.
Watts, who has directed Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, will take charge once again.
It had looked like a dispute between Sony and Marvel's parent company Disney over profit-sharing would see Spider-Man depart from future Marvel movies.
Disney does not own the rights to the Spider-Man character, which belong to Sony, a deal inked in 2015 between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios has, up until now, ensured that the web-slinger has been able to appear in Marvel films such as Avengers: Endgame, with Marvel supremo Kevin Feige working as a producer on Sony's recent Spider-Man films.
Feige had pulled out of producing any further Spider-Man movies for Sony, while it seemed that the character would l no longer appear in any future projects.
Now though, the two parties have renegotiated and come to an agreement that sees Tom Holland's Peter Parker make one more solo movie with Marvel and another Marvel Studios venture.
Speaking about the decision, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige told the Hollywood Reporter: "I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it."
He continued: "Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
The new Spider-Man movie, directed by Watts, will arrive in cinemas on July 16th in 2021.
Spider-Man: Far From Home, the hero's latest movie, will be released on DVD later this year. You can pre-order it here in hmv's online store.
