The musical, which starred Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, was released in June 2008 and went on to gross over $600 million at the box office.

The sequel has been written and directed by Ol Parker, writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel, with Lily James in the starring role.

The original movie told the story of Sophie Sheridan, a young woman who is about to be married when she discovers that any one of three men could be her father. Determined to find out she invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother.

The new movie will be both a prequel and a sequel to the original, with part of the story set in the present and part of the story set in the past.

James will play the younger version of Meryl Streep's character Donna, with the younger versions of her friends Rosie and Tanya played by Alexa Davies and Jessica Keenan Wynn.

Playing the younger version of Brosnan's character Sam is Jeremy Irvine with the younger version of Stellan Skarsgård's Bill played by Josh Dylan and the younger version of Colin Firth's Harry portrayed by Hugh Skinner.

Streep, Seyfried, Firth, Cooper, Brosnan, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters and Skarsgård are all back to reprise their roles, while Andy Garcia and Cher are also in supporting roles.

The movie will be released into UK cinemas on July 27th this summer.
