Jumanji: The Next Level - Five Reasons You'll Love It

When it was announced that beloved comedy Jumanji was to be rebooted, reaction was a mixture of bemusement and consternation.

The original was a key part of many childhoods, a dark, innovative comedy-drama that starred Robin Williams and a young Kirsten Dunst.

It followed the story of a 12-year-old boy who becomes trapped in a board game in 1969 and is released 26 years later. Upon release in 1995, it took over $260 million at the box office and scored rare reviews. A reboot made financial sense, if nothing else.

So, when the first looks at 2017's reboot Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle appeared, expectations were not high. Not only had the originally been rebooted, but it was now an action-adventure, driven by a video game, with a glossy cast led by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black.

Then, when people saw the film, it all changed. It didn't have the original's darkness, but it was good fun. Moviegoers like the new take and the film scored almost a billion dollars in box office receipts.

Naturally, a sequel was ordered.

In the sequel, the gang are forced to return to the jungle when one of them finds himself sucked back into the game...

Johnson, Hart, Gillan and Black all return for the sequel, they are joined by Ser'Darius Blain, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman and Morgan Turner, who all appeared at the beginning of the movie as the real-life versions of the characters.

Joining the cast for the sequel are Danny DeVito, Danny Glover and Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina. Jake Kasdan directs once again.

The film is now in cinemas and will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and limited edition steelbook in 2020. Click here to pre-order now.

Ahead of that, we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons why you'll love it...

The fun continues...

The sequel keeps the light touch and broad focus of the original. The jokes are frequent and the action is plentiful. It's an unashamed popcorn-fuelled blockbuster.

The new additions are well-chosen...

Danny DeVito and Danny Glover play elderly and doddering adventurers, a problem that's played for all its comic worth, while Awkwafina fits in superbly with the film's tone. All are good fits.

With a great villain too...

Rory McCann, who most of us know better as The Hound from Game Of Thrones, is on villain duty. He plays Jurgen the Brutal, a ruthless warlord, and he has a lot of fun doing it.

There are some great action sequences...

It was going to be a challenge to up the ante from the first movie, but there are some really spectacular sequences. In particular, a rope-bridge chase pursued by fierce mandrill monkeys, is a brilliant watch.

There's already a plan for more...

It seemed like everyone was too nervous last time around to talk about this being a franchise, but those nerves were shaken off, probably somewhere between the $500 and $700 million mark at the box office.

There's none of that time, things are well and truly set up for there to be more adventures.
