Kelly Reichardt opens up about making Certain Women with Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart and Michelle Williams
Kelly Reichardt has spoken about making her new movie Certain Women and how she was able to secure Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart and Michelle Williams for the small-budget drama.
The trio star alongside Lily Gladstone, James Le Gros, and Jared Harris in this bleak drama from Reichardt, who had previously directed the critically acclaimed Night Moves and Wendy and Lucy.
Set in rural Montana the movie follow the lives of six men and women, including a struggling couple and a lawyer trying to fend off a disgruntled client. As the movie progresses the lives of the six intersect to take us somewhere truly unexpected.
Speaking to hmv.com before the film's release, Reichardt said of the casting and how she secured the leads: "I didn't need any of them for that long, but they did have to make a big effort to come to a freezing place in the middle of nowhere so I was very thankful. They were all beautiful actors to work with, but they were never there at the same time, it was weirdly like making three different movies. We actually got the financing for the movie a bit faster this time so they really all had to jump in. Actually finding Lily Gladstone (co-star) was the hardest bit, she was a real gift from the film gods."
Then asked about her plans for after the movie comes out and if she ever thought that she would make a movie that she hadn't written herself, Reichardt said: "I don't know, I'm checking things out right now. I think if something came along that I loved that wasn't mine then I would consider it, but I like the long ride and the process of getting there."
Certain Women is released on DVD today (July 10th) and is available, along with the rest of Reichardt's back catalogue, here in hmv's online store.
