"The movie is a meditation on family and on fatherhood..." - hmv.com talks to Jon Berthal about tennis biopic King Richard
You don't have to be a huge tennis fan to recognise the names of Venus and Serena Williams - trailblazers, record breakers and arguably two of the greatest tennis players of all time - but in the world of tennis their father Richard Williams is almost as well-known as his two daughters.
A larger-than-life character and often a controversial, outspoken figure, their father has often been vilified in the press and criticised for what some saw as an overbearing influence on Venus and Serena's early careers, but a new film from director Reinaldo Marcus Green sheds new light on his story and his role in his daughters' success.
King Richard is available in hmv stores from February 21 and stars Will Smith in the role of Richard Williams, telling the story of their early careers as Venus becomes the first of the two sisters to turn professional.
Starring alongside Smith is a cast that includes Aunjanue Ellis as Venus and Serena's mother Oracene Price, American Horror Story's Sanyya Sidney as Venus Williams and Jon Bernthal as her coach Rick Macci.
Ahead of the film's cinematic release we spoke to Jon about his role in the film and why he felt Richard's story deserved telling in full. Watch our interview below...
