Kristen Stewart to play Princess Diana for Jackie director Pablo Larraín
Kristen Stewart will play Princess Diana in a new biopic.
Stewart will star in the film, which is to be titled Spencer, with Jackie and Ema director Pablo Larraín to take charge.
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has written the screenplay, which is set over a long weekend in the early 1990s when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles was over.
She made that decision, and the decision to leave the Royal Family even as she spent a Christmas holiday at Sandringham.
Speaking about the movie, Larraín told Deadline: "We all grew up, at least I did in my generation, reading and understanding what a fairy tale is. Usually, the prince comes and finds the princess, invites her to become his wife and eventually she becomes queen. That is the fairy tale. When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, 'I’d rather go and be myself', it’s a big decision, a fairy tale upside down."
He continued: "I’ve always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do. That is the heart of the movie. How and why do you decide to do that? It’s a great universal story that can reach millions and millions of people, and that’s what we want to do. We want to make a movie that goes wide, connects with a worldwide audience that is interested in such a fascinating life."
There is no word on who will play Charles or the rest of the Royal Family thus far.
Production on the movie, which will be the second biopic of Princess Diana, will begin in early 2021.
