Kristen Wiig confirmed to star as villain in Wonder Woman 2
Bridesmaids' star Kristen Wiig has been confirmed for the villain role in the sequel to Wonder Woman.
Wiig, who will next be seen in Richard Linklater's adaptation of bestselling novel Where'd You Go, Bernadette, takes the role of Cheetah in the sequel. A decision confirmed by director Patty Jenkins, who wrote:
So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can't wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned. #Cheetah!!! @GalGadot pic.twitter.com/Gn0jICiIAH— Patty Jenkins (@PattyJenks) March 9, 2018
There are various iterations of the character of Cheetah in the series' comic books, but Wiig's take on the character looks set to be the Barbara Ann Minerva incarnation.
Minerva is a rich heiress who through an ancient ritual acquires supernatural feline powers, a decision that sets on a course to take on Diana Prince in the sequel, which looks likely to be set during the Cold War.
Star Gal Gadot and director Jenkins are both confirmed to return for the sequel to Wonder Woman, which is due for release at the end of 2019.
