Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan open up about their radical new take on Little Women...

Greta Gerwig's debut feature film as a director, Lady Bird, was an instant hit with critics and audiences alike, with special praise being reserved for the screenplay, which Gerwig wrote herself.

Her follow-up also stars Saorise Ronan in a starring role, although her new film is quite a different prospect from her debut. Before Lady Bird had even gone into production, Gerwig was working on a long-held ambition to create her own adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's enduring coming of age story Little Women.

That creation - and the eighth cinematic adaptation of Alcott's novel - arrives in cinemas on Boxing Day and co-stars Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Timothy Chalamet.

With Little Women in cinemas this week and is available to pre-order now on DVD from hmv's online store.

Ahead of that, we sat down with Gerwig and Ronan for a chat about how it all came together...
