Live By Night - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

Ben Affleck has so far enjoyed an excellent relationship with Dennis Lehane. He made his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone, which was both a box office and critical hit and made his brother Casey a bona fide leading man in Hollywood. Now he’s back for more with Live By Night, a new gangster thriller.

As well as writing and directing, Affleck also stars and he’s joined by Sienna Miller, Chris Messina, Brendan Gleeson, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper and Elle Fanning.

Set in the 1920s at the height of prohibition in America, the movie follows the fortunes of Joe Coughlin, the son of a Boston police captain who moves Ybor City, Tampa, Florida and winds up becoming a bootlegger, a rum-runner and, later, a notorious gangster. While the work makes him rich and powerful it's a life that Coughlin clearly doesn't find easy to keep up.

It arrives on DVD shelves on Monday (May 22nd), but back before it hit cinemas we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons you’ll love it...

The period detail is incredible…

Nothing about this movie was cheap. Costing a cool $65 million to produce, the resources have been ploughed into immaculate set design and incredible period detail. From the suits to the drinks to the guns, it’s a masterclass.

Affleck leads the film superbly…

Joe Coughlin is a complex man, part ruthless gangster, part sentimental family man, part rebel, part company man, he’s a difficult package to sell, but Affleck captures him superbly.

Chris Messina is a revelation…

You probably know him best as the neurotic Danny from The Mindy Project, but here, as Coughlin’s chubby assistant Dion Bartolo, he’s a wisecracking, but deeply unsettling presence. An unorthodox, but excellent piece of casting.

Elle Fanning is a chilling movie stealer…

Fanning plays Loretta Figgis, a young woman who goes to Hollywood with dreams of stardom, falls into drug addiction and then returns as a fearsome evangelical preacher who soon wins a captive audience, scuppering many of Coughlin’s plans. She’s an incredible presence and it’s no wonder she’s already become a major star at the tender age of 19.

It’s not a bloodbath, but boy, does it have its moments…

This isn’t a shoot-em-up in the sense that there are bullets flying constantly, but there is one huge action set piece and it is quite something to witness.

Live By Night is released on DVD on Monday (May 22nd) is available to pre-order here in hmv’s online store.
