Mahershala Ali to play Blade in new Marvel reboot
Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali will play Blade in a brand new reboot for Marvel Studios.
Blade is Eric Brooks, whose mother was feasted on by a vampire during his birth, resulting in the passing of a number of vampiric abilities to him.
These abilities include hugely prolonged lifespan and the ability to sense supernatural creatures, as well as an immunity to complete vampirism. As an adult, he makes it his mission to protect humanity from vampires.
Blade was brought to the screen in 1998 with Wesley Snipes in the title role, sequels Blade II and Blade: Trinity followed in 2002 and 2004 respectively.
A short-lived TV series with rapper Sticky Fingaz in the title role ran for a single series in 2006.
Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige revealed over the weekend at this summer's ComicCon that Ali had approached him about the character, who Marvel reacquired the rights for in 2013.
There is no word on a release date for the film or who will direct the new movie.
