Maleficent 2 and Jungle Cruise given new release dates by Disney

Disney has scheduled new release dates for Maleficent 2 and Jungle Cruise.

The Maleficent sequel, which will see Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning return to star, will enter production later this year. It will hit cinemas on May 29th in 2020.

Ed Skrein is tapped to play the film's villain with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michelle Pfeiffer also joining the cast. Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville will also return to reprise their roles.

Maleficent, which took over $750 million at the box office upon release in 2014, is a live-action fantasy prequel to the 1959 Disney animation based on the classic fairytale.

Jolie played the title character, an evil fairy who cursed an infant princess to eternal sleep, only then to realise the young girl was the only one who could save the kingdom from its dangerous ruler.

For the sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' Joachim Ronning will direct, with Jez Butterworth and original writer Linda Woolverton working on the script.

The new movie's plot will pick up several years after the first and will explore the complex relationship between Jolie's Maleficent and Fanning's Princess Aurora, who is soon to be the Queen.

Together they will form new alliances and face new enemies in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.

For Jungle Cruise, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson will co-star alongside Emily Blunt, with Jack Whitehall, Édgar Ramírez, Jesse Plemons and Paul Giamatti among the supporting cast.

The movie, which will begin production as soon as star Johnson finishes promoting Skyscraper, has been given a release date of October 11th in 2019.

Jungle Cruise will be directed by The Commuter's Jaume Collet-Serra, is based on the Disney theme park ride which takes guests on a guided tour through the rivers of the world.

The movie will see Johnson play Frank, a boat captain, who takes a sister and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find a tree believed to possess healing powers.

As they travel, they must fight against dangerous wild animals and a competing German expedition.
