Margot Robbie to play Barbie in new big-budget comedy
Margot Robbie is to play Barbie in a new live-action comedy.
According to Variety, Robbie has closed a deal to play a character based around the hugely successful doll. The movie will be produced by Warner Bros and Barbie toy makers Mattel.
Speaking about the role, Robbie said: "Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery. Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president."
She went on: "I’m so honoured to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen.”
Originally, the Barbie movie was due to star Amy Schumer, but she dropped out of production and was replaced by Anne Hathaway.
That production was based at Sony, but has now collapsed and moved to Warner Bros. The script for that movie, which has been penned by Ocean's 8 writer Olivia Milch, will be revised for the new movie.
There have been 36 animated Barbie movies made over the years, but this would be the first live-action take on the hugely successful range of toys.
