Margot Robbie to star as Maid Marian in new gritty Robin Hood spin-off
Margot Robbie is to star in a new Robin Hood spin-off, this time focused on Maid Marian.
Robbie, who is currently filming I, Tonya, the biopic about figure skater Tonya Harding, will make the film for Sony. No director is currently attached.
According to Deadline, the story will pick up after Marian has seen the love of her life Robin Hood die before her eyes as she picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war. She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom but will see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.
It is unclear whether Robbie will begin work on this project before she reunites with Suicide Squad director David Ayer and reprises her role as Harley Quinn for Gotham City Sirens.
The movie will see Robbie's Harley Quinn will team up with the likes of Catwoman and Poison Ivy to form a brand new team. The script for the movie has been written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who has written the script for the Tomb Raider reboot and the forthcoming third instalment of Sherlock Holmes.
Marian is the second Robin Hood movie to be announced in recent months. Filming is currently underway on Robin Hood: Origins, which stars Taron Egerton as Robin Hood, with The Knick's Eve Hewson as Maid Marion, Jamie Foxx as Little John and Jamie Dornan playing Will Scarlett.
Ben Mendelsohn, star of Bloodline and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has signed up to play the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Robin Hood: Origins will be directed by Otto Bathurst, best known for his work directing Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. It is set to take the character back to his roots and discover how he became the iconic outlaw. It is due for release on March 23rd in 2018
Robin Hood was last on the big screen in 2010 with Russell Crowe starring as the titular hero in a movie directed by Ridley Scott. You can check that movie out here in our online store.
