Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell land key roles in Harley Quinn spin-off Birds Of Prey
Birds Of Prey, DC's new blockbuster, which will be lead by Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, has cast two key roles.
Birds Of Prey will be built around Robbie's Harley Quinn and sees her teaming up with three other female superheroes, Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya, to rescue a little girl from a crime lord named Black Mask.
Fargo star Mary Elizabeth Winstead will play Huntress. She saw off competition from Kingsman's Sofia Boutella, Wolf of Wall Street and How I Met Your Mother‘s Cristin Milioti and The Leftovers' Margaret Qualley to win the role.
Underground actress Jurnee Smollett-Bell has been cast as Black Canary, a role Belle‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw was also up for.
Huntress is a vigilante crime fighter, motivated to strike back at the mafia after the death of her family, while Black Canary is a world-class martial artist with a superpower: the "canary cry", a high-powered sonic scream which could shatter objects and incapacitate enemies.
One key role, Renee Montoya, has yet to be cast. Montoya is a Detective working on the Gotham Police Force.
Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan will take charge of the project, working from a script from Bumblebee's Christina Hodson. Production is set to begin in 2019.
The movie will hit cinemas on February 7th in 2020, a week before the new James Bond movie is set to debut.
