Mary Poppins Returns - Five Reasons You'll Love It

It's been 54 years since Mary Poppins first graced the big screen, earning five Oscars, over $100 million at the box office and a legacy like no other film.

In the 1964 original, which was adapted from P.L. Travers' stories, we watched as Julie Andrews portrayed a magical nanny who arrived to help Jane and Michael Banks, two neglected children become closer to their father.

To help along the way, she brought with her magic, wonder and a collection of songs that have gone on to become classics.

A sequel has been discussed a lot over the years, but has never quite come together until now, with Mary Poppins Returns.

Emily Blunt takes over from Julie Andrews in the titular role with Lin-Manuel Miranda playing Jack, an apprentice to Dick Van Dyke's Bert from the original movie, and a supporting cast that also includes Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep and Angela Lansbury.

Chicago man Rob Marshall is in the director's chair, working from a script from Life Of Pi writer David Magee.

Set once again in London, for the sequel, we find ourselves in the 1930s, Jane and Michael Banks are now grown-up, with Michael still living in the house on Cherry Tree Lane.

He lives there with his three children, Annabel, John, and Georgie and a housekeeper named Ellen.

Michael has lost his wife and is struggling financially, leaving him stressed and relying too much on his children. To help him out, Mary Poppins returns...

The film hits DVD shelves on Monday (April 15th), but, before that, we caught an early showing of this fairytale return and have rounded up five reasons why you'll love it...

Emily Blunt is a marvel...

Part of the reason it's taken so long for a sequel to come around is finding an actress to step into Julie Andrews' enormous shoes, but they've hit the jackpot with Emily Blunt. She captures Andrews' spirit perfectly, while adding her own touches to the character. A brilliant choice.

This is as much Lin-Manuel Miranda's film as it is Emily Blunt's...

The Hamilton star plays Jack, a cockney lamplighter. He starts the film and pops up throughout, bringing charm and verve each and every time.

The flights of fancy are brilliant...

At regular intervals, we're swept around from the grey dowdy London into magical realms, lit up with psychedelic visuals and incredible imagination. Each one will raise a big, big smile.

The new songs are great...

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman have created a delightful set of new songs, with the sprawling 'Trip a Little Light Fantastic' and the stirring 'The Place Where Lost Things Go'. particular highlights.

There's so much joy...

The movie is a joyful extravaganza, one that kids and adults will fall in love with, again and again and again.

Mary Poppins Returns will be released into hmv stores on Monday (April 15th).
