Matt Reeves working on TV spin-off The Batman: Gotham for HBO Max
We may have to wait a little longer to see Matt Reeves' hotly-anticipated reboot of The Batman due to the delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but the director hasn't been wasting the enforced downtime, nor has it taken his focus away from the caped crusader, it seems.
Deadline reports that Reeves is busy developing a spin-off series similar to Gotham, but set in the same universe as Reeves' upcoming reboot and intended as a companion series to the movie. Empire creator Terence Winter is writing the new series, which will be the first project under Reeves' new deal with Warner Bros. Television, while The Batman producer Dylan Clark is also overseeing production on the new spin-off series, which has just been given the green light by HBO Max.
It's not clear as yet whether Robert Pattinson will feature at any point in the new series, or if indeed there will be any crossover with other characters from the movies in the DC Extended Universe, but according to Deadline's report the series will be set before the events of Reeves upcoming film, and will explore Gotham's transition from a functioning city to a hotbed of crime and corruption.
Reeves said of the new project in a statement: “This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”
