Melissa McCarthy in talks to play Ursula in Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid
Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the villain Ursula in Disney's new live-action take on The Little Mermaid.
According to Variety, McCarthy is in early talks for the role.
Rob Marshall, director of Mary Poppins Return and Chicago, will take charge, working from a script from Poppins writer David Magee.
Released in 1989, the original adapted Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale, earning $233 million at the box office in the process.
The movie told the story of Ariel, a mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human, after falling in love with a human prince named Eric.
The new film will reprise many of the songs from the original as well as a series of new ones, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken.
There has been no confirmation on who will play Ariel or Eric thus far.
Evil Dead star Jane Levy and Zendaya have been linked with the role of Ariel, while both Harry Styles and new He-Man Noah Centineo have been rumoured to be on the wanted list for Eric.
