Men In Black: International - Five Reasons You'll Love It

Almost as soon as a third film in Barry Sonnenfeld's Men In Black series emerged in 2012, a full decade after its predecessor and 15 years since the original Men In Black arrived on cinema screens, the people behind the franchise began talking up a fourth movie.

It wasn't clear, however, what form a fourth Men In Black movie might take. For a long time it was assumed that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones would return to star in any projected fourth instalment in the franchise, but then in 2014 it emerged that the studio was planning a crossover movie between Men In Black and the newly rebooted Jump Street series helmed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, with James Bobin installed as director.

However, by last year it seemed that the crossover idea had been abandoned – perhaps for the best – in favour of a new spin-off starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, with Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray overseeing the project.

This Friday will see the film make its arrival in cinemas and finds the Men in Black agency going global in a plot which takes in trips to London, New York, Marrakesh and Naples. Hemsworth stars as Agent H, the top agent at the MIB agency's London bureau's, alongside Tessa Thompson as Agent M, a tenacious new recruit posted to the London office. When a member of an alien royal family is assassinated, leaving behind a weapon of unrivalled power, it soon emerges that the agency has a mole working for an alien race called the Hive, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on it...

Starring alongside Hemsworth and Thompson is a cast that includes Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rebecca Ferguson and Rafe Spall. With the film DVD shelves today (October 21st), we caught an early screening and rounded up five reasons why we think you'll love Men In Black: International...

It's every bit as much fun as you'd hope...

MIB International retains all the humour of the original films and even if the plot is a little bit sketchy at times, the new instalment is just as wacky and fun as you'd expect. The spin-off never takes itself too seriously, and neither should you.

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson make a terrific double act...

Half the fun of the Men In Black films was always the anti-chemistry between Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith's characters, and while the on-screen relationship between Hemsworth and Thompson is very different, the odd couple pairing of Thompson's eager new recruit and Hemsworth's puzzlingly inept golden boy makes for plenty of laughs.

The supporting cast are great too...

From Emma Thompson's steely agency boss to Rafe Spall's tediously officious apple polisher and Rebecca Ferguson's unhinged alien arms dealer, the supporting cast are very well chosen and all add to the sense of fun.

Kumail Nanjiani steals every scene he's in...

Although Nanjiani's role as the voice of tiny alien Pawny, who befriends the pair of agents when the rest of his people are wiped out by the Hive, means he never actually appears on screen, he still manages to be one of the film's real highlights and delivers many of the movie's best gags.

It opens up new possibilities for the Men In Black franchise...

It's too early to say whether or not there will ever be a fourth film with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith returning to the fold, but if one does emerge then it's easy to see how the cast of the new film could slot nicely into the action. Even if a fourth film with its original stars doesn't happen, Thompson and Hemsworth seem more than capable of picking up where they left off and taking the franchise forward themselves.
