Molly’s Game - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

The life of a Hollywood screenwriter normally comes with the acceptance that 99.99% of the punters who watch your work won’t be able to pick you out of a line-up, but Aaron Sorkin is one man who bucks that trend.

He’s best known for creating beloved series The West Wing, but now also boasts a writing CV that includes Moneyball, Steve Jobs, A Few Good Men and The Social Network, for which he won an Oscar.

His new movie Molly’s Game marks new territory for Sorkin as he not only provides the screenplay but also makes his debut as a director.

The movie is based on a true story and stars Jessica Chastain as Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who wound up ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons.

The game had players that included Hollywood stars, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. The movie follows her prosecution as she struggles to keep her clients' secrets and herself out of jail.

Sorkin adapts Bloom's book, Molly's Game: From Hollywood's Elite to Wall Street's Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker, for the movie, and has assembled a supporting cast that also includes Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Brian d'Arcy James, Chris O'Dowd and Jeremy Strong.

The movie arrives on DVD shelves on Monday (May 14th), but we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons why you’ll love it...

Jessica Chastain is a total revelation…

Sorkin has said in interviews that his search for Molly Bloom focused on the Miss Sloane star pretty quickly and for good reason, she’s an electric presence. It must have been a gruelling shoot, Chastain’s Bloom is in every scene and she goes through the full range of emotions as well as being beaten up more than once. An Oscar nomination is the least she deserves.

Her supporting cast are brilliant too…

Particularly excelling are Idris Elba, who plays Bloom’s gruff lawyer Charlie Jaffey, Jeremy Strong, who delivers a sleazy take on Bloom’s first boss Dean Keith, and Michael Cera, who plays the cocky megastar Player X, who might be Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck or another A-list actor, we can't be sure...

Aaron Sorkin excels as a director…

The screenwriter supreme takes to directing with ease, crafting an excellent thriller with Molly’s Game.

It’s a pacy watch…

At two hours and 20 minutes, it’s not a snappy flick, but the film moves at a brisk pace and you’re never bored. Mostly though, that’s because you’re witnessing Sorkin’s unique ability to make two people talking in a room feel like a $20 million action set piece. There’s a lot of that.

There are some heartswelling sequences…

In particular, Bloom’s park meeting with her exacting father, played superbly by Kevin Costner, that’s a true emotional rollercoaster.
