Mr. Robot's Rami Malek replaces Ben Whishaw in Freddie Mercury biopic
Rami Malek, star of hit drama Mr. Robot, has signed up to play Freddie Mercury in the long-awaited biopic of the Queen frontman.
The movie has been in development for the last eight years, with first Sacha Baron Cohen attached to play Mercury, then Ben Whishaw, but both ended up leaving the project and clearing the way for Malek to take the role.
The project also has a new director with X-Men: Apocalypse's Bryan Singer now in talks to take the role. Both Dexter Fletcher and Tom Hooper had been attached to the project, but did not make it through to production.
According to Deadline, the movie, which had been previously been backed by Sony, will now be produced by 20th Century Fox.
