Murder On The Orient Express - Five Reasons You’ll Love It

Agatha Christie has been enjoying something of a renaissance in the last few years, with nine major productions of her works put on either TV or film in the last three years and plenty more in the pipeline.

Biggest and grandest of all is this lavish new adaptation of one of her most famous works, Murder On The Orient Express.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the new adaptation stars Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michael Peña, Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley, with Branagh playing Christie's iconic detective Hercule Poirot.

The movie follows 13 stranded strangers all together on a train, a train where a bloody murder has taken place and Poirot's race to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again.

The film rolls onto DVD shelves on Monday (March 5th, you pre-order it from hmv’s online store by clicking on the icon on the right-hand side of the page), but back before it hit cinemas we caught an early screening and have rounded up five reasons why you’ll love it…

The suspense just builds and builds…

Given the novel on which this is based was first published in 1934, there’s plenty of people who will be all too well of the film’s climax, but those who aren’t? We can assure you’ll be guessing for a long time...

The film looks beautiful…

Branagh and his team’s eye for period detail is wonderful. The costumes are exquisite, the train is beautifully designed and when we get out into the snowy drifts outside the train, it all comes to life.

Branagh holds things together brilliantly…

The Dunkirk star isn’t the first man to take up the role of Hercule Poirot and he’s unlikely to be the last, but you’re unlikely to find anyone having as much in the role. As the movie’s central figure, he’s a compelling watch and very entertaining.

Johnny Depp is villainous marvel…

Depp plays art dealer Samuel Ratchett, the story’s shady presence and he revels in the role.

There’s a new instalment all set up…

News broke last week that Branagh has got the go-ahead to begin production on Death On The Nile, giving us another chance to see him grow that outrageous moustache and solve another case. We can’t wait...

Murder On The Orient Express is released on Monday (March 5th) and is available to pre-order here in hmv’s online store.
