The movie, which is loosely based on the novel The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Delaney, has been directed by Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov, who has received international acclaim for his movies Mongol and Nomad.
In Seventh Son, Barnes play a young peasant named Tom Ward, who is the mythical seventh son of a seventh son. He is discovered by Bridges' character, John Gregory, a powerful spook, who intends to coach Ward to fulfil his destiny to become a great king. As he coaches him, the pair encounter many monsters and mythical creatures.
As well as Bridges and Barnes, Julianne Moore, Olivia Williams, Djimon Hounsou and Game Of Thrones' star Kit Harington all have roles in the film.
Seventh Son has suffered from lengthy delays in getting a release. It was originally scheduled to come out in February 2013, but was moved back to October 2013 to complete post-production work. It was then delayed again after production partner Legendary Pictures parted ways with distributor Warner Brothers and then signed a new deal with Universal, resulting in a new release date of February 6th 2015.
