New Star Trek film to get 'fan-funded prequel'
With the production yet to wrap on the next instalment in J.J. Abrams' cinematic reboot of Gene Roddenberry's classic sci-fi series, we're still looking at 2016 before the new film finally hits the big screen, but some fans just couldn't wait that long...
A consortium of Star Trek enthusiasts led by Alec Peters and Christian Gossett have completed a fundraiser via Kickstarter to create their own prequel to the Star Trek series of films. Star Trek: Axanar is written, directed and acted out by fans of the series and is due to be released early next year, but a documentary-style preview will screen at Comic Con in San Francisco this weekend.
Peters and his friends have raised more than £58,000 towards the project's costs so far and aim to create something special for dedicated Trekkies: "We're in a time period where there isn't any Star Trek on TV, and people are looking for opportunities... for a lot of Star Trek fans, the J.J. Abrams films are not the Star Trek they grew up with.”
