Nicholas Hoult and Miles Teller frontrunners for key role in Top Gun 2: Maverick
Nicholas Hoult and Miles Teller are the frontrunners for a key role in the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun.
Top Gun was released in 1986 and starred Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis and told the story of a group of students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school, who compete to be best in the class.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hoult, Teller and Hidden Figures star Glen Powell are the frontrunners to take the role of the son of Maverick’s wingman and best pal, Goose.
Goose was played by Anthony Edwards in the original, but sadly died during the movie. His son though, will be a key part of the sequel.
Dylan O'Brien and Austin Butler were among other actors considered, but producers are now down to Teller, Hoult and Powell.
Joseph Kosinski, best known for directing Tron: Legacy, takes charge of the sequel, which will reportedly be set in a world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters and will explore the end of an era of dogfighting, a key feature of the original film. Production is now underway.
German composer Harold Faltermeyer, who created the much-loved synth score of Top Gun, has also confirmed that he will be returning to the production. Cruise and Kilmer will both return to star.
The sequel, which is titled Top Gun: Maverick, is due in cinemas on July 12th in 2019.
