Nominees announced for this year's BAFTA awards

BAFTA has unveiled the shortlists for this year's awards, with Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes' Carol leading the pack on nine nominations each, slightly ahead of Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant, which has a total of eight nominations to its name.

All three are in the running for the Best Film category, along with Adam McKay's The Big Short and Tom McCarthy's Spotlight. Four of those directors – Spielberg, McKay, Haynes and Iñárritu – are joined on the list of contenders for Best Director by Ridley Scott, nominated for his latest film The Martian.

In the Leading Actor category, the award will be contested by Bryan Cranston, Eddie Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Michael Fassbender, with the Leading Actress category being fought out between Alicia Vikander, Brie Larson, Cate Blanchett, Saorise Ronan and Maggie Smith.
