Paul Giamatti joins cast of N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton
Paul Giamatti, best known for his role in acclaimed indie comedy Sideways, has joined the cast of Straight Outta Compton, the new biopic about the early days of groundbreaking rap act N.W.A.
Giamatti, who starred in both 12 Years A Slave and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earlier this year, will play the group's manager Jerry Heller, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Heller, who founded Ruthless Records, was already an influential figure in the music scene before working with N.W.A. He had previously managed the likes of Journey, ELO and REO Speedwagon and helped Pink Floyd and Elton John with their early American tours.
Heller signed and managed N.W.A. and oversaw their rise. However, when the band broke up after founding members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre left, Heller was criticsed and named by some as the cause of the group's disbandment for mishandling money.
Straight Outta Compton is being directed by F. Gary Gray, with NWA members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre as well as Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright producing the film.
Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson Jr. is playing his father in the film, with Jason Mitchell playing Eazy-E and Corey Hawkins starring as Dr. Dre. The film is due for release in August of next year.
