Plot outline unveiled for John Wick: Chapter 3
After the runaway success of Chad Stahelski's 'gun-fu' action flick John Wick and its sequel, details about the storyline set to feature in the franchise's upcoming third instalment have emerged via an announcement at this week's CinemaCon.
It was revealed that the third film will be set in New York City and will pick up pretty much exactly where John Wick: Chapter 2 left off, with Keanu Reeves returning as the titular hitman and finding himself on the run after breaking the rules at the hotel run by Ian McShane's Winston.
Alongside a teaser poster for the third film, a promo synopsis outlined the plot details that will feature in John Wick's third outing: “John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s 'Excommunicado' - membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.”
Speaking to Collider last year, Stahelski confirmed he would be returning to direct the third chapter of the John Wick story and offered a few details on what we can expect this time around:
“We want, not so much to go bigger on the third one, but to show you more of the intricacies of the world… I feel like there are all these different subtleties that I skipped over in Number Two, that I’d like to go back to on [Chapter 3] and show you the inner workings of different parts of New York. So rather than massive set pieces, I’d like to show you cooler and more intricate ones.”
Keanu Reeves, Ruby Rose and Hiroyuki Sanada have already been confirmed as cast members, while rumours suggest that Ian McShane will also reprise his role as the Continental's proprietor, although his involvement has yet to be officially announced. There's no exact release date in the UK yet either, but the film is expected to arrive in May next year, with a U.S. release date slated for May 17th 2019.
