"I knew it was going to be a visual feast..." - hmv.com talks to the cast of Ready Player One
Ernest Cline's 2011 debut novel Ready Player One was a science-fiction melting pot of pop culture references that quickly became a cult favourite with film fans. Even before the novel was published in full, excerpts that had made their way online showed the potential for a cinematic adaptation and when the book shot straight to the top of the New York, a movie seemed inevitable.
Set in a dystopian near-future, the film tells the story of a rockstar Steve Jobs-type figure named James Halliday (Mark Rylance), whose invention the OASIS has become the world's virtual reality playground. When Halliday dies, he leaves behind an open challenge; find a series of hidden Easter eggs within the virtual reality world and control of the OASIS will be yours.
Bringing this story to the screen in a way that only he can is Steven Spielberg, who directs a cast that includes Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe and Simon Pegg.
With Spielberg's film arriving on DVD shelves on Monday (August 6th, you can pre-order it on the right-hand side of the page), we sat down with Tye, Olivia, Lena, Simon and the story's author Ernest Cline to talk about working with the director and bringing Ready Player One to the screen.
