Red Sparrow - Five Reasons You'll Love It

Perhaps with the exception of the USA, no other nation has fascinated filmmakers as much as Russia, and it's back there we return this week for Red Sparrow, the dark new drama starring Jennifer Lawrence.

The movie is an adaptation of Jason Matthews' best-selling novel, which follows Lawrence's Dominika Egorov, former prima ballerina turned state intelligence officer.

Despite her reservations, Egorov is drafted to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the service and asked to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a first-tour CIA officer who handles the agency’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence.

Co-starring alongside Lawrence are Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ciaran Hinds, Joely Richardson, Mary Louise Parker and Charlotte Rampling.

The movie has been directed by Francis Lawrence, who directed Lawrence in three of the four Hunger Games movies. Snitch scribe Justin Haythe has written the script.

Red Sparrow arrives in stores on Monday (July 9th) and ahead of its release in cinemas earlier this year we caught an early screening of the movie and have rounded up five reasons you'll love it...

It pulls no punches...

The trailers might make this look like a glossy thriller, but it's anything but. When it comes to showing the brutality of the international espionage, the violence and the deception, we see it all, in extreme bloody detail...

Jennifer Lawrence commands the movie superbly...

The supporting cast list might be impressive, but this is Lawrence's movie, she's in almost every scene and she commands things totally with an arresting performance.

Joel Edgerton is an excellent foil for Lawrence...

As bull-headed, but well-meaning CIA man Nathaniel Nash, Edgerton excels. He and Lawrence bounce off each other nicely, scheming constantly...

The score is superb...

James Newton Howard, who worked with Lawrence on each of The Hunger Games movies, is in striking form here, delivering a chilling score, it heightens every scene.

It'll keep you guessing until the very end...

There are enough twists here for several movies, you're pulled one way, then another, and then another. All your theories will be wrong too.

Red Sparrow is avilable in stores on Monday July 9th - you can also find it here in our online store.
