Roland Emmerich reveals title of Independence Day 2
Director Roland Emmerich has revealed that Independence 2 will have the full title of Independence Day: Resurgence.
The filmmaker confirmed the blockbuster sequel's title in a press conference last night (June 22nd) and also released a short video revealing the title, which you can see below:
Independence Day starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman and focused on a disparate group of people who converge in the Nevada desert in the aftermath of a destructive alien attack, planning their last stand against the alien invasion. It grossed over $800 million at the box office.
Emmerich also confirmed that the sequel will be set 20 years after the original, Earth now has a global defence system to protect the planet from future alien invasions. But, the aliens who invaded in the original are one step ahead and arrive with an advanced and unprecedented force.
Speaking about this, the director said: "We call it in the film the War of '96. It’s like a post-World generation that’s unified, and that's amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That's a resurgence."
The sequel will star The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth, rising star Jessie Usher, with Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A Fox, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch all returning to the reprise their rolea. Usher's role is to play the son of Captain Steven Hillier, the role played by Will Smith in the original blockbuster. Smith has currently said he will not be returning for the sequel. Hemsworth looks set to play the son in law of President Whitmore, played by Pullman.
Independence Day: Resurgence will be released on June 24th in 2016.
