Sam Mendes to take charge of World War I drama 1917

Sam Mendes is to direct a new World War I drama titled 1917

Mendes, who was last on the big screen with James Bond's latest adventure Spectre, will direct the film for Steven Spielberg's Amblin productions. 

Production will begin in April next year with the film due for release in December 2019. 

Mendes, who for the first time has co-written the screenplay, worked alongside Penny Dreadful writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
