Sausage Party: What You Need To Know
The hit animated comedy comes to DVD shelves today (December 26th, you can pre-order it on the right-hand side of the page) and here is everything you need to know about it...
What’s the plot?
Supermarket foods, long firm in the belief that being purchased and taken outside the store will ascend to a spiritual nirvana, slowly learn they are … wait for it… foods that will be consumed! An especially astute sausage most conspicuously travels the path to knowledge with his bun love interest, a bagel and a pita riding shotgun.
Who’s in it?
The credits are your first clue that Sausage Party isn’t your typical cartoon. Comedy partners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (see Superbad, The Interview, the before-mentioned Pineapple Express) co-wrote the screenplay with a few others, so the film’s twisted pedigree is very much in place. And the pair scrolled through their personal address books for voice talent, ergo Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Salma Hayek, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, James Franco and Paul Rudd joining Rogen in animating these characters.
Does it deliver?
It’s crude and profane but Sausage Party is also surprisingly smart, and it makes a few rather clever points about equality, acceptance and teamwork. It may not advance the vegetarian word as much as it could, but it’s hard to imagine adults not giggling at many of its sly (and not so sly) wisecracks.
