Shazam! 2 confirmed for release in 2022
It has barely been 24 hours since the news that a standalone movie starring The Flash is finally making its journey to the big screen, but the DCEU gets another confirmed addition today with the news that Shazam! is definitely getting a sequel. Not only that, Warner Bros. have named a release date too.
Shazam! 2 is set to be released on April 1st 2020, which means it will arrive not long after Black Adam, the spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson as the superhero's nemesis, which is due to land in December 2021.
Along with The Flash, the Shazam! movies join a growing list of DCEU movies currently in the pipeline, including Wonder Woman 1984, the rebooted Suicide Squad and its spin-off The Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn.
The close proximity of the release dates between Black Adam and Shazam! also hints toward the future of the franchise, and while there are no confirmed plans for some kind of showdown between the two characters as yet, many DCEU fans will no doubt be speculating that looks to be the direction we're heading in.
David F. Sandberg, who directed Shazam!, has not yet been confirmed to return for the sequel, but with announcements on the upcoming DCEU slate coming thick and fast lately we'd be surprised if there wasn't an update on who will be helming its follow-up in the near future.
