Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is getting a sequel and a spin-off
There are still a couple of weeks to go before Sony's new animated adventure featuring the Marvel web-slinger makes its arrival in cinemas, but it seems that the studio are pretty confident that they've got a hit on their hands – so confident, in fact, that they've already commissioned a sequel. Not only that, but it also looks as though it's getting a spin-off too.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is due to arrive in December and has been written by Phil Lord, who also serves as a producer on the movie along with his LEGO Movie co-director Chris Miller. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman are sharing directing duties on the film, which has already begun to earn itself some positive reviews from critics.
Apparently buoyed by the positive response so far – not to mention its huge box office receipts from the Tom Hardy-led Venom - Sony have already started to make moves in lining up a sequel and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, have tapped up Joaquim Dos Santos, best-known for his work on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, to direct. David Callahan, who wrote the screenplay for The Expendables and is currently working on Wonder Woman 1984, is the man reportedly tasked with providing a script.
In addition to the sequel, Sony are also planning a Spider-Verse spin-off and are reportedly in negotiations with Lauren Montgomery, who worked with Dos Santos on Netflix animated series Voltron, to work on an as-yet untitled movie focussed on the female characters in the Spider-Man universe. Bek Smith, the screenwriter behind CBS series Zoo, is also being lined up to write a script for the spin-off.
It's not clear at this stage when either of these will see the light of day and plot details for both remain tightly under wraps, but you'll be able to catch Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse when it lands in UK cinemas on December 12th.
