True stories don’t come as harrowing as that of Solomon Northup’s, as is demonstrated here in Steve McQueen’s breathtaking film adaptation of Northup’s 12 year capture at the hands of an assortment of diabolical plantation owners.

As it shouldn’t be, it’s not necessarily an easy watch and those with a squeamish disposition may want to look elsewhere, but it never compromises in it’s retelling it’s a harsh and brutal look at mans inhumanity to man.

Filled with breathtaking performances from Chijwetel Elljofor, Michael Fassbender and Lupita N’Yongo, this Best Picture winner was the crowing achievement of last year.
